Bevel Types: V, K, X, Y, J… Which one is best suited for your industrial process?

Thursday, May 15, 2025

In industrial machining and edge preparation for welding, choosing the right type of bevel has a direct impact on weld quality, material consumption, and overall production efficiency.

At CEVISA, we don’t just manufacture automatic bevelling machines — we also provide technical advice to help you define the most suitable geometry based on material, thickness, joint type, and accessibility.

Main bevel types and their typical applications

V Bevel
The most common geometry. Used on medium thickness plates, it allows for solid weld penetration with a single bevel from the top face.

Y Bevel
This bevel features a straight land at the bottom, offering better control of the root and reduced filler metal consumption. Ideal for structures requiring high thermal control.

K or X Bevel
Double bevel preparation from both sides, ideal for full-penetration welds on thick plates.
For these cases, CEVISA offers two solutions:
REV (Reversible): Machines like CHP-12G REV and CHP-21G REV, which bevel from the top and bottom with a single machine.
Standard + INV combination: e.g. CHP-12 + CHP-12 INV, CHP-21G + CHP-21G INV, or CHP-60G + CHP-60G INV, enabling simultaneous bevelling from both sides without rotating the plate — doubling productivity and improving operator ergonomics.

Transition Bevels
Used to connect sections with varying thicknesses or to facilitate complex assemblies, such as welded structures with geometric transitions.
Ideal for sectors like offshore, wind energy, and heavy infrastructure.
Our milling machines can produce progressive or combined bevels.
Recommended machines: CHP-30G and CHP-60G.

J Bevel
An advanced solution for critical sectors such as nuclear, pressure vessels, or high-responsibility structures, where maximum strength with minimal filler metal is required.
Our technology recently convinced a French customer in the nuclear sector:
“We are seeing more and more critical applications that require this special bevel.”

Recommended machine: CHP-60G with J-bevel attachment, capable of producing internal radius bevels in a single pass, with no need for rework.

At CEVISA, we don’t improvise.

We analyze your process, your materials, and your production demands to offer the exact machine your application requires.
